Yorkshire Businesses applaud top finance directors 2009

This region’s elite Finance Directors were honoured at the Yorkshire Finance Director of the Year Awards 2009, which took place at Rudding Park last night.

Compered by Michael Taylor from Insider, the event, now in its eighth year, is the leading competition of its kind in Yorkshire and is sponsored by Ernst & Young, Sewell Moorhouse and Hammonds LLP. James Lambert the Chief Executive of R&R Ice Cream was the main speaker and the awards this year were presented by last years winners.

Amongst the 2009 winners was Graham Henderson of engage Mutual Assurance who was presented with the evening’s outstanding achievement award. Henderson was commended for displaying that, whilst claiming to be risk averse, he is incredibly astute when it comes to the field in which he operates to the extent that engage, in comparison to many other similar businesses, are getting through the current market crisis in a relatively strong position.

James Lambert said, “A lot of talented individuals, who are just a fraction of the financial expertise that exists in this region, have been recognised here tonight. In some cases remarkable turnarounds have been achieved and it was a great personal pleasure to see some of Yorkshire’s finest FDs being rewarded for the part they’ve played in the success stories of their respective businesses.”

David Armitage, Partner from Hammonds LLP said, “This year's competition has once again highlighted the wealth of talent that is on offer in this region. The winners tonight have shown great dedication to their roles and have displayed what can be achieved even when times are tough.”

Cliff Sewell, Chief Executive of Sewell Moorhouse agrees. “We hear everyday that we are in the midst of a financial crisis as a nation. These winners have shown that despite difficult economic conditions, businesses can continue to grow and thrive.”

Phillip Hilling, Partner at Ernst & Young concluded: “FDs are often the unsung heroes who help management to keep a tight grip of the business. A really good FD is someone who can master the ship in different weathers, recognising that it may have to make some adjustments to its course to reach the objectives on the horizon. Entrants in this year’s competition have had to demonstrate their flexibility in the application of their skills. We have seen some great examples of individuals that have adapted to changing market conditions and consistently executed the basics at a high level.”
